Starting Small - Test Tyrant's Legion / Death Korps squad

My first Imperial Guard collection was the original Armageddon Steel Legion released in third edition the regiment raised to defend the system's central world, and I guess I'm finally returning to my roots.

From the Shadows - Dark Eldar Mandrake Test

While I thought a few of the original Dark Eldar kits, like their warriors, the vast majority of the line, especially the metals, just did nothing, and I was quite happy to see the Mandrakes, among others, basically get overhauled from the ground up.

A short one today, the first of those Mandrakes, which I'll be painting in large numbers, to see how the colors go down to be sure I didn't mess up a batch together. He's a mix of mostly traditional painting, with  just a little source lighting effects beyond the obvious bright points.

The Vanguard - Code Zero Anazi Dynasty Scouts (including review)

I had a lot of fun painting this unit from Garage Gaming's new Code Zero line. It's always pretty cool working with new lines others haven't already explored, and you can't get much newer than currently crowdfunding.

Advanced Infiltration - Deathwatch Overkill Genestealer test

After my general love of Space Hulk (more on that another day), Deathwatch Overkill was basically a non-choice, whether the game was good, or I just used them for the (sadly defunct) RPG line or old editions of Space Hulk.

So, this is my first guy, based on the same color scheme as my Space Hulk set, which also had me starting to clean up my Genestealers, since it's been some years and I could have done some better darks. Pretty happy with the orange light, and tried to make the ribbed armor very distinct from the ribbed exoskeleton bits while looking coherent...

Nothin', really... - Clear Void Wretch Test

As with any clear minis, it's a bit of a fight working with the materials. There's the more brittle clear plastic, followed by painting on an un-primed model, and finally trying to make the mini photograph half-decently, which was a bit of a stumbling block in this case. Somehow, in a softbox with only soft lamps lighting, there was still a lot of glare on the models.

The bottom is a fun bit highlighting the transparency, though usually there wouldn't be any light as harsh as that on the Wretch.

Forging a Narrative! (...or maybe just heating and hitting stuff) - Salamanders test Firedrake

I've liked Salamanders since my first introduction to them in the days of the Armageddon mini-codex back in 3rd edition, but this is the first time I've gotten to paint one.

Waste Not, Want Not - Revenant color test

Another new incarnation (possibly a reincarnation?), this time, mostly going with dead flesh rather than anything particularly bloody.

B Squad Leader - Samaritan Color Test

After doing a kind of standard job with my own Samaritans, going with something strikingly different was a lot of fun. I'm not really sure what else to say on this- the paint job went very smoothly, even if it did come out a little brighter than the X-COM reference. More Sedition Wars dudes to follow...

Blending In - Bolt Action BA-64 Armored Car

While I've done a lot of work influenced by historical armies, this is actually my first work on a historical vehicle (well, not counting poorly built model airplanes when I was a kid).

Black Operations - Storm Trooper test mini

I'd been toying with the idea to do some Storm Troopers, but hadn't really figured out what to do with the minis, until I started looking more into the Tyrant's Legion list, and their space-faring mercenaries.

"Goblinoid, He was a Goblinoid, Happier than You and Me" Oglah Khan's Hobgoblin Wolf Boyz, test

I feel my years of East Asian History and Art History, and Japanese language studies really culminated in this hobgoblin. This... may be the most racist model I've ever painted.

Braaains! Test Zombie

A quick little one today- a test color scheme for a Mantic Zombie- the first of many!

Done using a lot of the techniques I developed while painting up my Strain minis for Sedition Wars.
