Black Operations part 6: Dark Eldar Ravagers

Honestly, the Raider/Ravager redesign some years back had me extremely sorely tempted to start an army for my personal collection. I think the vehicles are just fantastically well-designed, as a mix of the original design and an updated, more explicitly pirate-themed look that evokes classic sailing (mostly) without feeling out of scale.

These are, of course, painted for the Mandrake army I've been adding to for the last while; I was going for pretty much as sleek and stripped-down look as I could get, while letting that teal really pop. I repurposed the "squad" look, with helmeted captains/pilots (heads from misc. dark elf kits), and, with a little tweaking, got it so the sponsons are actually replaceable.

Silver Tower is, well, as the title suggests, a bit of a romp. It's certainly in the tradition of a dungeon crawl, but simple and easy enough that it's a very casual experience.

A bit about my gaming history

In short, I've over time learned to be okay with silly rules sets, and while sexism in games isn't something I've been very comfortable with, I like games and enjoy painting toys with some skin showing as much as other pieces.

x for the x God - Herald of Khorne

This old Bloodletter Champion seemed like a good model to update, so he got repurposed as a Herald of Khorne.

Starting with some of my favorites, the Effigies are some of Wyrd's coolest sculpts, and I always enjoy trying to link disparate elements through a continuing color scheme.

Hard to Trajectorize... - Warriors of Chaos Hellcannon

This is actually the first artillery scenes I've done- it was pretty different doing a mini-scene as a standard model rather than a display piece.

I decided to do a pretty dark and unrefined look, with a fully rusted and bloody frame. I added the black trim and gold surfaces to the skull, ornamented wheels, skull plate, and helmets, to link the cannon to the rest of the army.

BLEERGH! - Nurgle Bile Trolls

Nurgle is my favorite Chaos God, Forgeworld does great minis, therefore, Bile Trolls were a joy to paint.

These guys went very quickly, and I thought got a very strong decaying look. My favorite is definitely the left one, not because of the guy (zombie? plaguebearer? tumor?) on his back but because the head was great to work with.

So... uh... yeah, this thing is huge.

Warriors of Chaos Manticore

So, I tried to make this one have a more natural look, since it was based off a real critter. I think the gold matches the rider to the mount nicely.

I've... really got nothin' on manticores or lions, couldn't think of a reference for this one, since the Wizard of Oz is about as played out as Ghost Busters when it comes to pop culture references...

Just a quick one today, since I already commented on the politics of these ancient models elsewhere. The regular guys were fun, had a lot of fun with the severed heads. I intentionally made them Asian-looking as a reference to the silly look of the stereotype.
